Twenty-four years ago award-winning director Joanelle Romero released her film which was short-listed for an Academy Award
AMERICAN HOLOCAUST: WHEN IT’S ALL OVER I’LL STILL BE INDIAN.
Joanelle Romero, reflecting on Ava DuVernay’s film “Origin,” emphasizes, “In my film, I explore the unmistakable parallels between Hitler’s blueprint against Jewish people and America’s historical termination, continuing to the present treatment of our Native Indigenous peoples. It goes beyond the confines of race, addressing the broader issues encompassing the doctrine of discovery and blood quantum.”
The Conversation will explore the similarities and where we go from here regarding subject matter from both films.
Ava DuVernay's (AMPAS member) film 'ORIGIN' is truly a must-see. As I immersed myself in its narrative, I couldn't help but recognize parallels between Ava's work, inspired by Isabel Wilkerson's book "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents," and my own film, short-listed for an Academy Award in 2000, titled 'American Holocaust: When It's All Over I'll Still Be Indian.' The resemblance lies in the unsettling resemblance to Hitler's blueprint. He drew inspiration from the treatment of our Jewish relatives, applying similar atrocities against our Native Indigenous and African American relatives under the hands of America.
