Grape Soda in the Parking Lot

What if every language that had been lost to English — every word, every syllable — grew up out of the ground in flowers? Taqralik Partridge’s grandmother’s Scottish Gaelic and her father’s Inuktitut unfold in memories of her family, of pain, and of love.

Directed by Megan Kyak-Monteith, Taqralik Partridge

Megan is an oil painter and digital illustrator from Nunavut. Cultural observations are made in her paintings which come from childhood memories growing up in Nunavut and Nova Scotia. She depicts these memories from her childhood as saturated with exaggerations of scale and atmosphere, and much like with any memory, they are never exactly accurate to what is recalled. Megan was born in Pond Inlet, Nunavut and graduated NSCAD University in 2019 with a BFA in interdisciplinary studies in painting. She currently works as a freelance illustrator for books and articles and continues to paint from her home in Halifax.

Taqralik Partridge is a writer and artist originally from Kuujjuaq, Nunavik (Quebec) and now based in Kautokeino, Sápmi (Norway) and Ottawa, Ontario. As an urban Inuk, she speaks to city life in the south with a style grounded in the tradition of Inuit storytelling blended with “urban speak”, weaving real-life stories with rhyme, lullaby, and Inuit throat singing. She was recently appointed director of the Nordic Lab at SAW Gallery in Ottawa. Some of Taqralik’s work is currently on exhibition as part of NIRIN the Biennale of Sydney.
